Beaucarnea
A plant with history
In 1861, the notary and renowned plant collector Jean-Baptiste Beaucarne brought a remarkable plant with elegant fine leaves and a thick bulbous trunk from Mexico to Beaucarne House. He was the first in Europe to successfully cultivate and bring this extraordinary plant to bloom in his greenhouse in Ename. Thanks to this achievement, the plant still bears the name "Beaucarnea recurvata".
Today this plant, which belongs to the succulent family, is threatened with extinction due to the disappearance of its natural habitat.
