Marie Claire Fredericq-Lilar (1934 - 2022)

Back to news

It is with great pain and sorrow that we announce the passing of Marie Fredericq Lilar on 5 January 2022. She passed away surrounded by her close family.

Marie-Claire Lilar (1934 – 2022) was the daughter of the writer Suzanne Lilar and Minister of State Albert Lilar, and the sister of the writer Françoise Mallet-Joris. During her life she was a renowned art historian, specialised in 18th-century painting and domestic culture, with an unparalleled passion for Huis Beaucarne and its interiors. Since her marriage to Jacques Fredericq in 1953, she had lived there.

We take comfort in the thought that we were able to be part of her life — that she was our inspiration and our support, that she believed in us, shared her sense of wonder and passion, and taught us so much. We are proud to see our life’s work as a tribute to the life of such an extraordinary person.

This year we do not begin in sadness but as a great tribute to Marie Fredericq Lilar (1934 – 2022). Through guided visits and celebrations in her beloved home, garden and grape greenhouse, we will continue her life’s work.
